I don't know about you, but I got run a little ragged this weekend, trying to make use of and preserve the start of Summer's bounty. Before I knew it, it was late afternoon. But I had plenty of time to make these biscuits, cut up some fruit, and have an easy, fresh dessert.

I'm a big fan of cultured butter - and I think it was the main type of butter that was in use when most people kept a family cow. It just makes more sense to do it that way. But I've found it hard to get my favorite brand lately. So I made my own. Plus, I had actual buttermilk left over to use in my bread. The combination is delicous simplicity.

This weekend, I visited my sort of-local needlewor This weekend, I visited my sort of-local needlework store, Country Stitches, for some floss. And was introduced to the Year of Gnomes by @imagined_landscapes

Naturally, I bought a pattern and some mini skeins, then came home and ordered the Mystery KAL pattern and yarn for that. As one does.

For this week's Sabbath Stitching I've cast on and begun "Gnome is Where You Hang Your Hat," and am enjoying the colorwork refresher. Although I ought to have gone for higher contrast yarn selections.

Which put me in mind of all the advent knitting calendars I saw last year. I passed on them at the time, because I couldn't think what I would do with all those mini skeins. Now that I DO have a use for them, I'm finding the really intriguing sets are already sold out.

Anyone have a suggestion for an indie dyer yarn advent calendar that might lend itself well to Gnomes?

I've found that a handwork project - something I just enjoy working on, without any sort of deadline - is a helpful past time for slowing down. Spending time in quiet contemplation is easier if my hands are busy.
